After one full week of distance learning with my three children, I’ve decided that revisiting some of my Love and Logic Parenting concepts might be helpful for myself, and maybe, just maybe, there are a few other parents out there clamoring for ways to keep everyone in the household happy, healthy, and FUN to be around. Through the years I’ve discovered the best way to raise kids who are happy, healthy, and FUN to be around is by modeling that myself. It has given me the permission to recognize and acknowledge the ways in which I need care for myself, so I can do the best job possible of caring for my children. Parenting with Love and Logic is one of the ways I am able to make parenting fun. A few months ago my father-in-law, Papa, as the kids call him, was caring for my boys after school while I was at work. Papa called me up because my 5-year-old son, Brock, had decided he didn’t want to do his afternoon chores. Rather than have Papa put my son on the phone to beg, plead, guilt, and/or yell at him until he did his chores (by the way I’ve done this plenty of times), I told him that Brock was free to not do his chores, but he was going to have to find a way to pay someone else to do them. I mentioned that the average cleaning service is about $30 per hour. Before we knew it, Papa and I were having a great time helping Brock compile a list of his things that he was willing to sell at the local pawn shop so he could come up with the $30 to pay someone to do his chores for him. When I hung up the phone, Brock was pondering on whether or not it was worth it to sell some of his more valuable and beloved Beyblades in order to pay someone to do his chores. A few minutes later I got a text from Papa. By keeping our cool and lovingly handing the problem back to my son, not only were we able to guide him to solve his own problem, but we had a great time doing it!
